Troubleshooting a Riveter That Will Not Pull, Will Not Release, or Will Not Break the Mandrel

Before a riveter goes in a box and gets shipped somewhere, work this list. In our experience most faults are resolved at the bench in under half an hour, and the parts involved are inexpensive.

Work it in order. The steps are arranged from most likely and cheapest to least likely and most involved, and skipping ahead is how people replace a cylinder to fix a dirty jaw.

Symptom: weak pull

  1. Measure pressure at the tool inlet while the trigger is pulled. Not at the regulator. If you are below the tool rating, stop here and fix the air supply - hose ID, coupler size, filter condition.
  2. Pull and clean the jaws. Wire brush and solvent on the serrations. Packed debris makes jaws slip under load. If the teeth are rounded, replace them.
  3. Check the jaw pusher and spring. A weak spring lets the jaws open under load.
  4. Check hydraulic oil level per the manual procedure.
  5. Check for oil weeping around the piston. A leaking seal loses force under load even if the tool feels normal unloaded.
  6. Suspect the air motor last. Worn vanes give gradual power loss plus higher air consumption.

Symptom: short stroke, mandrel does not break in one pull

This is almost always hydraulic.

  1. Hydraulic oil level. The most common cause by a wide margin. Follow the manual's fill position and stroke position exactly.
  2. Air in the hydraulic circuit. Bleed per the manual. Air compresses; oil does not - trapped air eats stroke.
  3. Wrong oil. Too heavy, especially in a cold shop, and the tool will not complete its stroke.
  4. Verify the rivet is within the tool rating. A 1,320 lb tool will not reliably break a 3/16" stainless mandrel. This is a specification problem, not a fault.

Symptom: mandrel will not release

  1. Jaws packed with debris - clean them.
  2. Weak or broken jaw spring - replace.
  3. Worn jaw pusher - replace.
  4. Nose piece bore worn oversize - the mandrel is not being stripped cleanly on return.

Symptom: rivets set inconsistently

  1. Inspect the nose piece. Bell-mouthing, chips, scoring. Compare against a new one.
  2. Confirm nose-to-rivet match. Right diameter, right type - blind vs. monobolt vs. structural are not interchangeable.
  3. Check squareness of approach. If operators are angling the tool to reach, they need an extended nose assembly, not more force.
  4. Check hole prep. Oversized or bell-mouthed holes produce inconsistent sets regardless of the tool.
  5. Verify grip range. The rivet has to suit the stack.

Symptom: weak or no vacuum

  1. Empty the collector. Genuinely the first thing to check.
  2. Check the collector seal - it must seat fully.
  3. Inspect the vacuum tube assembly for cracks or blockage. Parts 107113 and 214123 cover common configurations.
  4. Check air pressure - the vacuum generator runs off the same supply and is the first thing to suffer when pressure is marginal.

When to send it in

Scored cylinder bores, cracked housings, damaged threads, and internal hydraulic damage are bench-repair jobs with proper tooling. So is any tool that has been run low on oil for a long time.
