Metric or Imperial? Getting Fastening Tooling Right the First Time

This is not an exciting topic and it costs our customers real money, so it is worth a post of its own. Metric and imperial fastening tooling look alike, sit next to each other in the drawer, and are not interchangeable.

The near-miss problem

The reason mixing happens is that several metric and imperial sizes are almost the same:

  • M6 and 1/4"-20 - close enough to start by hand, far enough apart to gall.
  • M5 and #10-24 - similar diameter, different pitch entirely.
  • M8 and 5/16"-18 - the same trap one size up.

A mandrel that is forced into a mismatched insert damages both. On a rivet nut tool the mandrel is a precision part, and replacing one costs far more than the box of inserts that were ruined alongside it.

How we label it

Our part numbers carry the suffix so you do not have to guess:

  • E = imperial. ZRN1606E covers #8-32 through 1/2"-13. ZRN2508E is the 5,500 lb imperial tool. ZRS1606E is the imperial stud setter.
  • M = metric. ZRN1606M covers M4 through M12. ZRS1606M is the metric stud setter.

The Q-series quick-change tools are specified by metric capacity - ZRN1600Q for M5, ZRN700Q for M5, ZRN500Q for M6, ZRN280Q for M10, ZRN212 for M12.

Identifying what you already have

If a mandrel is unlabeled, do not guess by eye. Two reliable methods:

Thread pitch gauge. Cheap, fast, definitive. Every shop that runs both systems should own one and keep it with the tooling.

Thread a known-good fastener onto it. If it runs on smoothly and fully, you have a match. If it binds after a turn or two, stop - do not force it, and do not conclude it is "close enough."

For inserts, check the packaging. Loose inserts in an unlabeled bin should be treated as unknown and gauged before use.

Running both systems without incidents

Shops that do this well tend to do the same handful of things:

  • Physical separation. Different drawers or different colored cases. Not different corners of the same tray.
  • Label the tool, not just the box. Paint pen or engraved tag on the tool body.
  • A pitch gauge on the bench, not in someone's toolbox.
  • Dedicate tools where volume allows. If a station only ever runs M6, keep an M6 tool there permanently.
  • Document it on the work instruction. If the drawing calls for M8, the instruction should name the tool and mandrel by part number.

Which should you standardize on?

If you have a choice, follow your customers. Automotive and aerospace work in North America runs heavily metric because of platform sourcing; general fabrication, trailer and agricultural work still runs a lot of imperial. Most of our customers who serve mixed markets end up owning both and managing them carefully - which is a perfectly good answer, as long as the management part is real.

Tell us the thread callout from the drawing, not just the diameter. M6 and 1/4"-20 sound the same over the phone and are not. We would rather ask twice than ship the wrong mandrel.
