Setting Up a New Fab Shop: The Fastening Tools to Buy First

New shops tend to buy tools in the wrong order. The pattern is predictable: the exciting tools come first, the boring infrastructure comes last, and then nothing performs to spec because the air system was an afterthought. Here is the order we would actually recommend.

Stage one: air supply, before any tool

Nothing else matters if this is wrong.

  • Compressor with headroom. Add the CFM of every tool that could run simultaneously and buy above it. Continuous-duty tools - grinders, sanders, needle scalers - dominate this number.
  • Hard-piped distribution with drops near the work. Take drops off the top of the main, slope the main to a drain.
  • Filtration and a dryer. Water destroys air tools and ruins finishes.
  • Correctly sized hose and high-flow couplers. 3/8" ID minimum for anything substantial. Undersized couplers waste more pressure than most people believe.
  • Whip hoses and line oilers at each drop.

This is unglamorous and it determines whether every tool you buy afterward performs to its rating.

Stage two: the core fastening tool

Buy one riveter that covers your range with margin, rather than two that each cover half.

For most general fabrication that means the 2,000 lb class - the ZT0918VS at 1,983 lb or the ZT0922 at 2,000 lb. Both set 3/16" in any material, and the ZT0922 adds monobolt capability. Take the vacuum version and the kit with the full nose set. The price difference is small and it removes two future problems.

If you already know you will be setting 1/4" rivets, start at the ZT1819VS (3,960 lb) instead. Buying up front is cheaper than buying twice.

Stage three: threads in thin material

As soon as you are building anything that has to come apart for service, you need rivet nuts. For a shop that does not yet know its steady-state mix, a spin/pull/spin tool is the right first buy because of its range - the ZRN1606E covers #8-32 through 1/2"-13, or the ZRN1606M for M4 through M12.

Add quick-change Q-series tools later, once volume on a specific size justifies a dedicated tool.

Stage four: material removal

Weld cleanup, deburring and edge prep start on day one, so this comes sooner than people expect.

  • A straight die grinder - the ZP313, 22,000 RPM with a 1/4" collet.
  • An angle die grinder - the ZDG-236K kit for anything you cannot approach head-on.
  • A needle scaler if you work with hot-rolled stock, weld slag or any rust.

Match every abrasive to the tool RPM rating. This is a safety requirement, not a preference.

Stage five: as the work demands

Lockbolt tooling when a customer specifies it - the ZT2318HK kit covers 3/16" and 1/4" in both C6L and Magna-Grip. Compression riveting if you take on aircraft or precision sheet metal. Air ratchets and the ZL-9880WU work light for assembly and service work.

What to skip at the start

Highly specialized tools for work you do not have yet. In-line and split-type tools for ergonomic problems you have not encountered. A second riveter that overlaps the first. Buy those when a job pays for them.

What not to skip

Spares. One jaw set and one spare nose piece per size, from day one. A shop with no spare jaws is a shop that stops.

Documentation. Keep manuals and parts diagrams together and accessible. In two years nobody will remember which nose piece is on which tool.
