Rivet Studs vs. Rivet Nuts: When You Need a Stud Instead of a Threaded Hole

Rivet nuts are well understood: they put a female thread into thin material. Rivet studs are the same idea inverted - they leave a male threaded stud projecting from the panel. The setting principle is nearly identical and the tools are closely related, but the assembly problems they solve are different.
Why a stud instead of a hole
Three reasons come up repeatedly.
Blind assembly
If a component has to be dropped onto a panel and secured from one side, a stud makes that possible. The part slides over the stud, a nut goes on, done. With a threaded hole you have to align a hole, start a bolt, and hold the part while you do it - often with one hand and no line of sight.
Locating and alignment
A stud is a locating feature before it is a fastener. Two studs fix a part in position with zero fiddling. This is a real cycle-time saver on a line and a real frustration-saver in field service.
Stacking multiple parts
Where several components layer onto the same point - a bracket, a ground strap, a cover - a stud handles it cleanly. Each part drops on in order and one nut secures the stack.
Where rivet nuts still win
- Flush surfaces. A stud sticks out. If the panel has to be flat when nothing is attached, use a rivet nut.
- Shipping and handling. Projecting studs get bent in transit and snag on everything.
- Frequent service access. A stud with a damaged thread is much harder to deal with than a rivet nut you can chase.
- Safety. Studs at head or hand height are a hazard.
The tools
Our rivet stud tools mirror the rivet nut range:
- ZRS1606E - heavy-duty air rivet stud setter, imperial.
- ZRS1606M - metric, M4 through M12, 3,500 lbf.
Compare with the corresponding nut tools - ZRN1606E and ZRN1606M - and you will see the same force class and range. The difference is entirely in how the mandrel engages the fastener.
As with rivet nuts: metric and imperial mandrels are not interchangeable. E is imperial, M is metric, and forcing a near-fit will gall a mandrel and ruin studs.
Setting them well
The failure modes are the same as rivet nuts, and so are the fixes.
Hole size is critical. Oversized and the stud spins under torque, which makes it useless and difficult to remove. Follow the manufacturer spec and check your drill or punch for wear.
Set stroke on scrap first, in the real material stack. Under-set is loose; over-set crushes the body and can distort the thread.
Protect the thread. The projecting thread is exposed from the moment it is set. Thread protectors during handling and painting are cheap insurance, and a damaged stud usually means drilling it out.
Keep it square. A stud set at an angle will not accept the part cleanly and puts bending load on the joint.
Choosing between them
The simplest test: which side is easier to work from during final assembly? If the answer is the side the fastener projects from, use a stud. If the assembly has to present a flat surface, or if parts will be removed and reinstalled often, use a nut.
