Rivet Nut Tools: Spin/Pull/Spin vs. Spin-Spin, and Which One Belongs in Your Shop

Rivet nuts put a machine thread into material too thin to tap. That is a genuinely useful thing, and it is why they show up everywhere from automotive interiors to solar racking to battery enclosures. The tooling comes in two philosophies, and choosing between them is mostly a question of what your production looks like.
Spin/pull/spin
The tool spins the mandrel into the insert, uses hydraulic force to pull and upset it, then spins back out. Because the pull is hydraulic and the stroke is adjustable, you get precise, repeatable deformation regardless of operator technique.
Where it wins: wide size ranges, critical joints, mixed material stacks, and any application where a poorly set insert is expensive to discover later. The ZRN1606E covers #8-32 through 1/2"-13 at 3,500 lb; the ZRN2508E steps up to 5,500 lb over the same imperial range. The ZRN1606M is the metric equivalent, M4 through M12.
Where it costs you: cycle time. Three motions per insert is slower than two, and the tools are heavier.
Spin-spin
Rotation does everything. The mandrel spins in, and reversing rotation draws the insert up and upsets it. Fewer moving parts, lighter tool, faster cycle.
Where it wins: volume runs of a single size. Our quick-change Q series is built for this - ZRN1600Q (M5, 1,700 RPM), ZRN700Q (M5, 720 RPM), ZRN500Q (M6, 500 RPM) and ZRN280Q (M10, 280 RPM). Note the pattern: as capacity goes up, speed comes down. That is torque, and it is unavoidable.
Where it costs you: set quality depends more on getting the setup right, and each tool covers a narrower size range. Running six sizes on spin-spin means more tool changes than one spin/pull/spin would.
Choosing
- One or two sizes, high volume, same material every time - spin-spin, quick change.
- Many sizes, changing stacks, or critical joints - spin/pull/spin.
- Field service and repair - spin/pull/spin, for the range.
- M12 or 1/2" capacity - spin/pull/spin, or the dedicated ZRN212 for M12.
Two things that cause most failures
Hole size. Rivet nuts are far less forgiving than rivets. A hole a few thousandths oversized lets the insert spin in place under torque - and a spinning insert is unusable and hard to remove. Follow the manufacturer hole spec exactly, and check your drill or punch for wear.
Stroke setting. Under-set and the insert is loose. Over-set and you crush the body, damage the threads, or crack the panel. Set stroke on scrap in the actual material stack before you touch production parts, and re-check it after any size change.
Metric and imperial are not interchangeable
Worth repeating because it costs people mandrels: the mandrel thread has to match the insert thread exactly. M6 and 1/4"-20 are close enough to start and far enough apart to gall a mandrel. We use E for imperial and M for metric in our part numbers for exactly this reason.
