Impact Wrench Torque Ratings: Why the Number on the Box Is Not What You Get

Impact wrench specifications are a small minefield. Manufacturers publish several torque numbers, measure them differently, and the figure on the front of the box is rarely the one that predicts how the tool performs on your rack.

Three different numbers

Maximum torque is typically measured in reverse, on a fresh dynamometer joint, at full rated pressure, after a generous number of impacts. It is a real measurement and it is close to a best case.

Nut-busting torque is the loosening figure. It is almost always higher than the tightening figure, because breaking static friction is a different problem than developing clamp load.

Working torque is the honest number - what the tool delivers in normal use over a normal duration. It is often meaningfully lower than maximum, and not everyone publishes it.

When you compare tools, compare the same figure measured the same way, and ignore marketing numbers that do not state the test condition.

Your air supply sets the real ceiling

Here is the part that surprises people: an impact wrench rated at 90 psi produces its rated torque only at 90 psi measured at the tool inlet while the trigger is pulled. Not at the regulator, not at the tank.

Pressure drop comes from hose inner diameter, hose length, quick-couplers and fittings. A 3/8" ID hose that is fifty feet long, with two undersized couplers, can easily cost you twenty psi under load. That is not a small effect - torque falls off steeply with pressure.

Practical fixes, in order of impact: use larger-ID couplers, shorten the run, go to a 1/2" ID hose for high-consumption tools, and put a short whip hose at the tool so the heavy hose is not fighting the operator.

CFM matters as much as PSI

An impact only draws air while it is running, so duty cycle matters. A compressor that keeps up with intermittent lug work will fall behind on continuous disassembly. If the tool starts strong and fades, that is a CFM problem.

Impacts do not set torque

This is the important one. An impact wrench delivers a series of hammer blows; final clamp load depends on joint stiffness, thread condition, lubrication, socket fit and how long the operator holds the trigger. Two identical fasteners run by the same tool for the same time can end up meaningfully different.

For any fastener with a torque spec - wheels, suspension, engine components, anything structural - run it down with the impact and finish with a calibrated torque wrench. Torque sticks help limit over-torque on wheels but they are a ceiling, not a specification.

Sockets and technique

Impact-rated sockets only. Chrome sockets are hardened for static loads and can shatter under impact. Six-point over twelve-point on anything tight - twelve-point rounds corners. Keep the socket square to the fastener; a cocked socket concentrates load on two corners.

And on a seized fastener, penetrating oil and time beat more impacts. Hammering a rusted stud usually just snaps it.

Maintenance

Oil the inlet daily. Drain your moisture trap. If a tool has been dropped, check the anvil and retaining ring before the next job - a worn retainer is how sockets get launched.
